I really enjoy the service learning experiences that VCU have to offer. Prior to the program, I engaged in numerous volunteer events such as MOM projects, free clinic, and Project Homeless Connect. Giving back to the community and serving those who are less fortunate is a passion of mine. Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Project Homeless Connect for the second year in a row. I was very excited because this was the first year that I actually got to attend as a VCU dental hygiene student. At these events, we are exposed to a variety of situations and conditions. One of the things I witnessed was drug abuse. Bandaids and excessive puncture wounds on the inner forearm were clear evidence of the intravenous drug use. It was heartbreaking to screen patients with blood pressures of 160/100 whom stated that they can no longer afford their blood pressure medication. This event was extremely rewarding. The patients were very appreciative of our services and I reccomend that everybody attend atleast one of these self-gratifying projects!
I included a video from the 2009 Project Homeless Connect and I found me at 1:17sec =) (even though it is only 2 seconds LOL)

I agree with you 100%. It was a truely rewarding experience. I enjoyed myself and the best part about was that I was giving back to those who needed it the most. It think everyone should definitely attend this event next year. This was my first time doing it and I'd definitley do it again! :)
